Guess Who Before You Read. Anybody remember this face? This is a classic, legendary Brasilian player. In 2002, my friend Tim, and I were walking in Rio, about 1 block off of Copacabana Beach. If you don’t recognize his face yet;- He played for Brasil in both the great ‘82’ WC team, and the ‘86’ WC team. In ‘82’, he was the ultimate, classic overlapping Brasilian left-back. One article stated, “He’s the best left-back in the world, but can he defend”.- I can give you a lot more hints, but here’s one more. Think of the beach, and beach soccer as a hint.He used to also play for Brasil’s National beach soccer team. Tim and I were walking down the road, and I looked to my left, and the great ‘Junior’ was leaning against his car. I had to go talk talk to him, and get a photo with ‘Junior’, truly great and friendly.Hope you look him up.

(2-on-2) Heading Game. In 2005, I had the privilege of visiting Everton. I got to spend a day watching their (U-18s) or (U-19s) train. They played this (2-on-2) Heading Game for 50 minutes, and just ate it up. It’s not beneath them, and a great way to improve heading.When I start younger players with heading, the first 3-4 activities I have them do, are “self-serve”. Also, it’s tempered with common sense. The ball isn’t going to be that high, the younger you go, so limit what heading you do. Often, I introduce heading to 5 year-olds (you heard that right). I just have them balance the ball in their head “for as long as they can”. That’s it. Just know, and know early, the head is part of the game. That said, it’s not part of the game at 5 years-old, but start getting them comfortable with the ball near their face/on their head. Nothing with impact though -Duh!
